Emergency Steps For Cleaning Water Spots On Your Suede Boots

If you accidently splashed water on your favorite pair of suede boots, you may cringe at the thought of either having to deal with a costly dry cleaning bill or having to wear marred footwear. However, you may be able to restore the beauty of your boots by following the emergency steps below.

Step 1:  Dab The Fresh Water Spots With A Clean Cloth

As soon as possible after they get wet, dab the water spots with a clean, white cloth. Do not use a colored cloth, as the dye could run and discolor your boots. Dabbing up as much water as you can while the spots are still fresh helps keep the moisture from penetrating deep within the fabric.

Also, do not rub the area, since this may only spread the water to the otherwise dry parts of the boot. Instead, wrap a dry portion of the cloth around your index finger, and apply firm pressure to the water spot. Repeat until you are unable to soak up any more water. Then, go on to the next step.

Step 2:  Dust The Spots With Talcum Powder

Once you have removed the excess water, dust the spots with a light layer of talcum powder. The powder will absorb any residual moisture, pulling it out of the suede.

Do not apply a heavy layer or rub the powder into your boots. This could make the talcum cake, which not only could make it difficult to remove in the next step, but could trap moisture in the suede, causing even more water damage.

Once you have lightly dusted your boots, set them in a dry spot overnight. Then, go on to the next step the next morning.

Step 3:  Brush Your Boots With A Soft Brush

After your boots have dried and you have given the powder time to work, the final step is to brush away the powder with a soft brush. Ideally, you should use a suede brush, since its bristles are specially designed for the material. You may be able to find the brush at a department store or the store where you purchased your boots.

If you do not have a suede brush, use a clean, soft toothbrush. Use light pressure to brush away the powder, using straight strokes in the same direction each time.

Following the above steps should remove the water spots, allowing you to step out in your suede boots with confidence. However, if the spots are old or the wet area is too large, you may want to contact the store where you purchased the boots to see if they can offer any suggestions for saving them.
